The National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) offers unpaid internships in its Public Affairs department during the fall, spring, and summer.
Organization
Based in Washington, D.C., NAICU (www.naicu.edu) is the largest organization representing the leaders of private, nonprofit colleges and universities on federal issues, including those affecting student aid, tax policy, and government regulation. NAICU's 955 member institutions include traditional liberal arts colleges, major research universities, church- and faith-related institutions, historically black colleges and universities, women's colleges, performing and visual arts institutions, two-year colleges, and schools of law, medicine, engineering, business, and other professions. NAICU spearheads several public initiatives, including U-CAN (www.ucan-network.org), the Student Aid Alliance (www.studentaidalliance.org), and the National Campus Voter Registration Project (www.yourvoteyourvoice.org).
Purpose
The intern will provide support to NAICU's public affairs staff. He or she will report to the Director of Public Information, and work closely with the Vice President of Public Affairs and other staff.
Responsibilities
May include, but are not limited to:
- Writing articles and news briefs for the association newsletter and web site
- Researching, writing, and packaging summaries of campus innovations in areas such as college affordability, cost-control, and environmental sustainability.
- Drafting news releases and other press material.
- Developing press lists.
- Tracking media coverage of NAICU's issues.
- Assisting in the development, maintenance, and promotion of association-related social networks.
- Posting and maintaining content on association web site
NAICU is confident that these responsibilities will provide students with a solid understanding of the association's communications activities, and help them gain practical experience in Washington, D.C. Specific assignments will vary depending on the intern's skills and specific interests and the needs of the NAICU public affairs staff at the time.
Qualifications
- Professional demeanor, solid organizational skills, good time management, ability to multi-task
- Strong work ethic and willingness to show initiative
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Experience with news writing and editing, on deadline
- Solid analytical ability and Internet research skills
- Experience in using social media, and interest in their use as public information/advocacy tools.
Educational Requirements
- Should have completed at least two years of undergraduate study
- Concentrations of study may include communications, PR, journalism, marketing, political science, or a related area
- Minimum GPA 3.0/4.0
Length of Service
Exact start and end dates are flexible, and will be determined by the student and NAICU.
- Summer internship will run approximately from May to August
- Fall internships will run approximately from September to December.
- Spring internships will run approximately from January to April.
Fall and spring interns will work approximately 10 to 15 hours/wk. Summer interns will work approximately 30-40 hours/wk. Actual number of hours worked per week will be determined by the student and NAICU.
Compensation/Academic Credit
This is an unpaid internship, but we are happy to work with colleges and universities to facilitate school credit.
