Union Wave Comes to the College Campus

Undergraduate students who work in dorms, libraries and dining halls are starting to unionize. The effort has played out at a handful of liberal-arts colleges such as Harvard University, where students voted this week to form a union, but interest is also increasing at larger public universities. University of Oregon student workers voted overwhelmingly this month to create a union. Galvanized by graduate-student unions and a nationwide increase in organizing across industries, undergraduates say they want better workplace conditions. Organizers seek higher pay, protections against layoffs and shifts more compatible with their school schedules.
