Round-up: Speculation Rises on Trump Education Secretary Nominee

As President-elect Donald Trump announces individuals he intends to nominate for cabinet secretary positions in his second administration, speculation abounds about who will be selected to lead the Department of Education.

Inside Higher Ed reports the following candidates are likely to be on the short list: “Ryan Walters and Cade Brumley, the state superintendents of Oklahoma and Louisiana, respectively; Tiffany Justice, the co-founder of Moms for Liberty; and Christopher Rufo, a board member at New College of Florida and senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research. Other candidates include Betsy DeVos, who served as Education Secretary during the first Trump presidency; Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), chair of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce; Mitch Daniels, president emeritus of Purdue University and former governor of Indiana; and Florida and Virginia governors Ron DeSantis and Glenn Youngkin, respectively.

It is expected that the individual nominated will oversee dismantling and elimination of the Education Department, a frequent Trump promise during the campaign.
