Appropriately or not, Sweet Briar is now viewed as a canary in a coal mine by other small, liberal-arts colleges that are also worried about survival in the new century. In the third and final part of a Chronicle interview, Phillip C. Stone explains why he sees something greater at stake in his job as president of Sweet Briar than the survival of a single liberal-arts college in Virginia.
