Private College Police Could Get More Authority as Detroit Mercy Seeks to Improve Neighborhood

Ahead of a massive overhaul planned for a neighborhood in northwest Detroit, Dr. Antoine Garibaldi, president of the University of Detroit Mercy, said campus safety officers there might soon join the Detroit Police Department in patrolling off-campus neighborhoods.  But under state law, officers appointed by a private college or university can only make arrests on property owned or leased by the institution. They "are not certified as law enforcement officers under the commission on law enforcement standards act."
