Two Upstate NY Private Schools Expect Lower Enrollment Due to Cuomo's 'Free Tuition'
Two private universities in Upstate New York are anticipating decreases in enrollment this fall, a drop both schools attribute at least in part to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's promise of "free tuition" for public university students.
Clarkson University in Potsdam expects a 10 percent drop -- about 75 students -- this fall, and Ithaca College expects as much as a 6 percent drop of 35 students. At Clarkson, the decrease might result in the university losing 20 to 30 employees through attrition, an official said.
