How New York's Free Tuition Program Is Affecting Private Colleges, Universities

Some private colleges and universities have gotten creative, trying things like discounting tuition, adding programs and looking at other new ways to attract more students, since New York state started its free tuition program for public universities. The state's Excelsior program — which offers free tuition to certain students from families that earn $125,000 a year or less — started in 2017.
