Longtime Georgetown President DeGioia Steps Down Months After Stroke

John J. DeGioia, a Georgetown University graduate who became the D.C. institution’s longest-serving president, is stepping down from his role months after suffering a stroke. DeGioia, who has been the school’s leader since 2001, announced Thursday that he needed more time to focus on his recovery. He will continue as a faculty member and president emeritus. DeGioia suffered a stroke in June, according to the university. He initially spent time rehabilitating in the hospital, according to Georgetown spokesperson Ruth McBain, and is now continuing his recovery at home. Robert M. Groves, provost and executive vice president, will become interim president.
