U.S. Representative Glenn Grothman (R-WI), a member of the Congressional Independent Colleges Caucus (CICC), was recognized today for his leadership on issues related to higher education and support of independent colleges and universities by Barbara K. Mistick, D.B.A., president of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU).

“Rep. Glenn Grothman has been an active and influential lawmaker on higher education issues since his arrival in Congress,” Mistick said. “For his support of student-focused initiatives, the colleges and universities in his district, and the entire private, nonprofit higher education sector, NAICU is proud to recognize Rep. Grothman’s contributions.”

The Congressional Independent Colleges Caucus (CICC), launched in February 2017, offers Members of Congress an opportunity to both celebrate and advance awareness of the nation’s independent colleges and universities, and learn about the challenges and issues these institutions face.

A five-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Greenbush in Sheboygan County, WI, Rep. Grothman was presented with a framed replica of his CICC Member Spotlight by Mistick during a meeting on Capitol Hill. He serves on the House Committees on Education and the Workforce, Oversight and Accountability, and Budget.  He also serves as chairman of the Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs.

His district, which stretches from Sheboyhan to Portage and from Oshkosh to Beaver Dam, is home to four private, nonprofit institutions: Concordia University Wisconsin, Lakeland University, Marian University, and Ripon College.  Wisconsin is home to 32 independent colleges and universities enrolling 65,213 students.

“I work every day to make sure students have the best opportunity to succeed in school,” Rep. Grothman said.  “The Sixth District is home to four independent colleges. I am very familiar with each of these schools and have seen their quality teachers, students, and facilities. I am proud to represent a district that has so many first-class independent colleges that produce productive, prepared contributors to our community.”

Concordia University Wisconsin President Erik P. Ankerberg, Ph.D. praised Rep. Grothman as a thoughtful leader.

“Rep. Grothman has demonstrated a long-standing, deep commitment to private higher education,” said Ankerberg. “When he visits our campus or attends our university events, he always takes time to meet with our students, faculty, and staff. He actively listens to their ideas and concerns and strongly encourages them in their work. He is a thoughtful leader and partner as we live out our mission and carry out meaningful work.”
Lakeland University President Elizabeth Borgen, D.B.A. praised Rep. Grothman for his support for innovation in workforce development and higher education.

“We are thankful for Rep. Grothman’s support of our award-winning Cooperative Education program,” Borgen said. “This new approach to higher education focuses on students getting the skills they need through education while lowering post-graduation debt.  He understands and supports this innovative approach to higher education that also addresses the region’s workforce development challenges.”
Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities President and CEO Eric Fulcomer, Ph.D. praised Rep. Grothman as a partner to the state’s independent colleges and universities.

"Congressman Grothman has been a friend to and a supporter of the independent colleges and universities in Wisconsin; he understands and appreciates the economic impact that our institutions have on the communities in which they are located and the state at large,” Fulcomer said.  “Congressman Grothman regularly interacts with the leadership of the campuses in his district and is always willing to hear from us about the impact of potential legislation and federal policy on our institutions.”

The CICC is led by co-chairs Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-WA) and Rep. David Joyce (R-OH) and includes 74 members in the 118th Congress.
