Senate Confirms Deputy Secretary of Education

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Dr. Mitchell (Mick) Zais to serve as Deputy Secretary of Education. The 50-48 vote was split across party lines. The Deputy Secretary serves as the number two position within the U.S. Department of Education.  Prior to Zais’ confirmation, the position had previously been filled on an acting basis since the inauguration of President Trump in January 2017.
 
Deputy Secretary Zais had previously served as president of Newberry College in Newberry, S.C. from 2000-2010, and as South Carolina’s Superintendent of Education from 2011-2014. Prior to his nomination, Education Week reported on details about Deputy Secretary Zais’ career and public policy positions.
