NAICU Submits Comments to DHS on Duration of Status

NAICU submitted formal comments, co-signed by 285 member institutions and associations, to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on the proposed rules on Duration of Status and Extension of Stay procedures for international students studying in the U.S.

The proposal has several troubling suggested changes, including limiting stays in the U.S. to two- and four-years depending on a student’s country of origin and educational plan.  In addition, extending visas and stays in the U.S. would be a decision made at DHS, without input from the institution on academic performance, and no appeals would be allowed.

NAICU also signed a community-wide comment letter submitted by the American Council on Education.  All told, over 31,000 groups and individuals submitted comments to DHS on this proposal.
