Nearly 1,200 Urge Congress to Double Pell

NAICU, along with nearly 1,200 other colleges, universities, and organizations, signed a letter to Congress this week urging policy makers to double the Pell Grant award.

In a statement, NAICU President Barbara Mistick said, “This call to double the Pell Grant is the single most important step Congress can take to make college more accessible for low-income and first generation students.”  Nearly 300 organizations and nearly 900 individual colleges and universities, almost half of which were private, nonprofit, signed the letter.

A tool kit has been developed to help spread the message, especially with federal policy makers.  Components of the kit include talking points, social media content and graphics, and a draft statement for those who signed the letter.  All of these materials can be tailored by individual colleges and universities for use with the media, policy makers, and others.

Doubling the Pell grant is one of NAICU’s top policy priorities and this letter is just the first step in what is becoming a national effort to call on Congress and the Administration to make increased federal grant aid a top priority.
