FEMA Resources Available for Emergency Preparedness
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is hosting a Technical Assistance Webinar to help organizations that are interested in applying for funding for its Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP), which provides resources for “hardening and other physical security enhancements and activities” to non-profit organizations that are at high risk of a terrorist or other extremist attack.
The purpose of the program is to help integrate nonprofit preparedness activities with broader state and local efforts. FEMA will hold the webinar on two separate dates, April 25 (3:00-5:00 p.m. EDT) and again on May 4 (2:00-4:00 p.m. EDT).
Private, nonprofit colleges and universities are eligible to participate in the program but must partner with their State Administrative Agency (SAA), which are the only entities eligible to apply.
In FY 2023, Congress appropriated $305 million for the NSGP. The program has grown substantially in the past several years—in FY23, funding increased by 22% over FY 22, on top of a 39% increase the previous year. The program is equally divided into two funding streams, one for organizations located in designated high-risk urban areas, and one for organizations located outside of those areas.
NAICU member institutions interested in the NSGP grant are encouraged to contact their SAA as soon as possible (SAA state contacts). The deadline for applications to each state varies, but all states must submit their applications to FEMA by mid-May. Visit the NSGP Subapplicant Quick Start Guide for information on program eligibility and how to apply.
