Pell Grant Students May be Eligible for Internet and Food Assistance

In an email to Pell Grant recipients, the Department of Education informed these students that they may be eligible to participate in the Affordable Connectivity Program and receive benefits via the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was created during the pandemic. As most of America pivoted to online learning for school and many for virtual work, it became evident that there was insufficient access to the internet for low-income communities. Even though the pandemic emergency is over, the ACP continues to be available for eligible students and families. The program provides recipients $30 per month for internet service, and a one-time $100 voucher toward a laptop, tablet or other device. Students receiving Pell Grants are the first example on the ACP list of who is eligible for the program.

The SNAP program at the Department of Agriculture has provided food assistance for working families with tight grocery budgets for years. Low-income college students may be eligible for SNAP benefits if they meet certain criteria. The Department’s email encourages Pell Grant recipients who need additional food assistance to talk to their financial aid office or local SNAP office to determine eligibility.
