Teacher Prep Funding Stopped

The Department of Education notified institutions of higher education with teacher preparation program grants that their federal funding would stop at the end of February. The two programs that private, nonprofit colleges and universities participate in the most are the Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) and Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) grants. According to the Department, its rationale for the move is that the teacher preparation programs violate President Trump’s executive order on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

TQP grants allow institutions to foster partnerships between colleges and local elementary and secondary schools to improve teacher training, student achievement, and teacher recruitment and retention. Partnerships can focus on pre-baccalaureate “fifth year” teacher certification or teacher residency programs for recent graduates with strong academic backgrounds.

SEED grants increase the number of highly effective educators by supporting the implementation of evidence-based practices that prepare, develop, or enhance the skills of teachers, principals, or other school leaders. A variety of entities are eligible for SEED grants, including for-profit organizations, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), institutions of higher education (IHEs), Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), nonprofit organizations, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs), or consortia of such entities.
