Student Loans Forgiven for Another 150,000 Borrowers

The Biden Administration announced two recent tranches of student loan forgiveness, raising the total amount of loans forgiven to $183.6 billion for more than five million borrowers.

The first tranche included several types of discharges, with 6,100 borrowers being approved through Public Service Loan Forgiveness for $465 million, 85,000 borrowers receiving relief through borrower defense to repayment in the amount of $1.26 billion, and 61,000 borrowers having $2.5 billion forgiven through total and permanent disability relief.

The second round of forgiveness is $4.5 billion in discharges for students who attended Ashford University between 2009 and 2020. This follows the lawsuit successfully brought by the California Department of Justice against Ashford University’s parent company, Zovio, Inc.
