Antisemitism Hearings and Investigations Continue
Antisemitism on college campuses remains a key focus for both Congress and the Trump Administration as lawmakers continue to hold hearings and federal agencies pursue new investigations of colleges and universities.
At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this week, lawmakers examined antisemitism across multiple sectors in America, but college campuses were singled out for a majority of the criticism. In particular, Republican members of the committee argued that institutions should be stripped of federal funding if they do not respond sufficiently to antisemitic incidents on campus and that international students engaging in antisemitism should have their visas revoked and be deported.
Meanwhile, investigations into antisemitism on college campuses continue to expand, with additional federal agencies launching inquiries. While the Department of Education continues to investigate potential Title VI violations at colleges and universities, other agencies have joined the effort as they implement President Trump’s executive order on antisemitism.
For example, the Department of Justice has formed a multi-agency task force to combat antisemitism. The task force includes the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services, and other agencies may join as necessary. The Justice Department also announced that it has begun an antisemitism investigation of the University of California under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, and religion in employment. Likewise, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission plans to prioritize antisemitism investigations of colleges and universities under Title VII.
