Senate Passes Protect College Sports Act; Action Moves to House
Earlier this week the Senate overwhelmingly approved the Protect College Sports Act by a 77-22 vote, marking a significant bipartisan breakthrough after years of congressional debate over the future of college athletics. The legislation, led by Senate Commerce Committee Chair Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-WA), establishes a federal framework governing issues including name, image and likeness, student-athlete protections, transfers, revenue sharing, and college athletics governance.
The legislation now moves to the House, where its path is less certain. House leaders have not committed to bringing the Senate bill to the floor, and the House is currently scheduled to remain out of session until after the November elections. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) previously said he would seek to “build consensus around the Senate product,” while describing the legislation as “a lame duck item, most likely.”
