March 31, 2023

The Department of Education is making $1.6 million in grants available for “public and private agencies, organizations, institutions, and individuals to improve and strengthen instruction and enrollment in modern foreign languages and related areas studies” under Title VI International Education of the Higher Education Act.

The two grant opportunities in the International Research and Studies program include:
  • Ten awards, ranging from $72,000 to $102,000, for research, studies, or survey projects; and
  • Ten awards, ranging from $43,000 to $60,000, for specialized instructional materials.
Applications are due May 12, 2023.

Entities can apply for grants that focus on research, students, and surveys related to foreign languages, or the creation of specialized instructional materials for modern foreign languages.  For both purposes, applications can assess a variety of elements that contribute to the improvement of international education, including changing needs in the demands for foreign language instruction, effective methods of instruction, evaluations of Title VI programs, the use of technology in foreign language instruction, the collection and dissemination of data, among other things.

Priority will be given to applicants who partner with at least one community college, Historically Black College or University, Tribal college, or other Minority-Serving Institution.
